Dear Ole Tyme Customers:

The USDA has suspended avocado shipments from the State of Michoacan, a major producer at this time of year. Social unrest and protests, unrelated to avocado production, are restricting access routes to town, including two USDA inspectors who were detained. USDA security protocol was activated, and the suspension was initiated on June 15.

Packing and shipping are currently at a full halt. Industry discussions with the USDA to resolve and restart operations are ongoing. Many shippers have called it a Force Majeure or Act of God due to the suspension. Regardless of the duration the suspension will cause shortages and probable gaps in avocado availability moving forward. Jalisco, Mexico is currently in production with no disruptions, however this region represents less than 3% of the volume sent to the U.S. from Mexico with approximately 2-3 weeks remaining.

The industry will look to Columbia, Peru and California to fill the gaps in supply, however, there just will not be enough fruit to meet demand. The California crop estimates were recently re-estimated to 250M lbs. Representing approximately 40M lbs. of extra fruit to be harvested. As we approach the upcoming 4th of July Holiday supplies will be extremely light for the near term and possibly well beyond depending on how the negotiations progress. June.
