Crop Update
Crop Update
Fri, June 20th, 2025
Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
Confirmed Crop Impacts:
Iceberg lettuce, romaine, and broccoli fields in Southern Mexico have suffered significant damage due to recent tropical activity, including heavy rain and hail from Hurricane Erick. These crops are the most heavily impacted, with quality and yield issues already being reported.
What’s Ahead:
Another tropical system is expected to develop off the coast of Southern Mexico later this week. NOAA reports that conditions are favorable for a tropical depression to form over the weekend, which could bring additional rainfall to already saturated fields. Growers are struggling to access fields with equipment, further delaying harvest and production.
Broader Market Pressure:
- Other crops may also be affected as assessments continue.
- Domestic production is increasing, but extreme heat across much of the U.S. (from the East Coast to the Mississippi Valley) is adding stress to crops.
- With reduced volume from Mexico and weather-related challenges in the East, demand is shifting heavily to California—resulting in tightening supplies, especially for lettuce and romaine.
