Leafy Greens & Tender Crops
Leafy Greens and Tender Crops
Wed, Jan. 22nd, 2025
Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
Cold temperatures in Southwestern desert growing regions are expected to persist into next week, following last week’s heavy wind event. This weather is delaying harvests, reducing supply availability, and impacting the quality of leafy greens and tender crops.
Harvest Delays & Supply Impact:
- Harvesting is delayed until temperatures warm, leading to reduced overall supply in the supply chain.
- Very cold mornings with moderate to heavy lettuce ice are slowing growth rates in desert fields.
Crop Quality Challenges:
- Leafy Greens (e.g., lettuce):
- Issues include wind and fringe burn, blistering, discoloration, feathering, and epidermal peeling.
- Outer leaves are being trimmed, resulting in lighter cartons, smaller head sizes, and reduced color consistency.
- Tender Leaf Crops (e.g., spinach, spring mix):
- Increased yellowing, discoloration, weaker texture, and shorter shelf life.
Iceberg Lettuce Specifics:
- Outer cap leaves may show feathering and peeling, with potential discoloration during storage and transit.
- Heads underneath remain firm, clean, and of good texture after trimming damaged leaves.
Long-Term Concerns:
- Freeze damage is expected to become more apparent in upcoming harvests.
- Cold temperatures will slow growth further, possibly causing future supply shortages.
