Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
The Salinas season is ending under tough conditions. Rain, humidity, and temperature swings have increased disease and insect pressure, leading to reduced yields, inconsistent quality, and shorter shelf life. Yuma’s early flooding will likely cause poor early yields, making the transition over the next 6-8 weeks difficult. Huron is expected to begin mid-October with limited but good-quality volume.
Key Commodity Impacts:
- Iceberg: Most affected; lighter weights, INSV, mildew.
- Romaine & Green Leaf: Mildew, twisting, heavy trimming = lower yields.
- Broccoli, Cauliflower, Broccolini: Insect pressure, pin rot, variable quality.
- Celery: Sporadic insect damage, thinner stalks, lighter color.
- Shelf Life: Reduced across commodities despite proper handling.
- Huron District: Mid-October start with promising quality, limited volume.
Recommendations:
Keep inventories lean, set clear quality expectations, and prepare for volatility through early December.
