Dear Ole Tyme Produce Customers:
Granny Smiths are continuing to define the term “tight supply”. The crop was short this year and now we are reaching the end. Most shippers are down to their last few storage rooms for the year and most of them if not all of them will gap in between old crop and new. Washington state is nearly 100% of domestic granny production during this time of the year and their inventories are down 1.4 million cases vs. the same time last year. There is a small granny deal coming up in California, but that won’t start until the very end of August. The new crop in Washington won’t start until the end of the second week in September. The new crop is expected to be much larger than this year and of excellent quality.
- Granny Smith supplies moving from “tight” to “extremely scarce”.
- Short crop on a light alternate bearing year.
- 1.4 million cases less on inventory than same time last year.
- New crop California Grannys should start at the very end of August.
- New crop Washington Grannys will start mid September.
- New crop expected to be much larger than old crop.
