Heat Advisory - Western Growing Regions
Heat Advisory - Western Growing Regions
Mon, March 16th, 2026
Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
An Excessive Heat Advisory is currently affecting key growing regions in Yuma, Arizona and Huron, California.
Daytime highs are forecasted to reach the low to mid-90s over the next 10 days, significantly above the typical March average of 68°F. These elevated temperatures are expected to accelerate crop maturity and impact normal harvest patterns.
Commodities Most at Risk
- Romaine, Leaf Lettuce, Spring Mix – Increased risk of tip burn, internal burn, insect pressure, and shorter shelf life
- Iceberg Lettuce – Lighter head weights and higher field culling
- Broccoli & Cauliflower – Smaller crowns/heads and accelerated maturity
- Celery – Lighter stalk weights and variable quality
- Green Onions & Cilantro – Reduced shelf life in prolonged heat
What This Means for Harvesting
- Crews are adjusting schedules to start earlier and finish sooner for safety
- Shortened harvest windows may lead to reduced daily volumes
- Faster crop maturity may create short-term supply fluctuations
Potential Supply Impacts
- Decreased harvest volumes
- Lighter carton weights (especially lettuce and brassicas)
- Increased insect pressure and quality control culling
- Market fluctuations as supply adjusts to rapid maturation
We are actively communicating with growers and shippers and will continue to monitor field conditions closely. Further updates will be provided as this heat event develops.
