Dear Ole Tyme Produce Customers:
Update: Oranges
- Markets continue to strengthen with school demand back in play.
- With demand picking back up with school business starting, harvest remains on the lower side with the goal of extending this extremely short Valencia season.
- Valencias are available in the Central Valley and Riverside area right now.
- Currently, The Central Valley is peaking on 56ct and larger fruit. Riverside area is currently peaking on 88ct.
- Offshore navels are available on the East and West Coast and are a great option to sub into when Valencias are not available.
- The upcoming Domestic Navel crop is expected to begin mid/late-October.
- Brix on the Valencia’s are in the 12 range.
Regreening Explanation
- Extended heat in the Central Valley has caused regreening in the Valencias.
- Regreening occurs as Valencia oranges continue to ripen on the tree. Summer’s warmer weather causes the orange’s skin to reabsorb chlorophyll, resulting in a green skin at the stem end.
- Regreening is naturally occurring, not to be confused with Citrus Greening, which is a devastating disease in citrus trees caused by a bacteria transmitted by a type of psyllid.
- Oranges experiencing regreening are fully ripe, sweet and delicious.
