Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
As the California Navel orange season progresses, availability of 113ct and 138ct fruit remains extremely tight.
The industry is beginning to look ahead to the transition into the California Valencia season, expected to begin mid to late April. While a few shippers are discussing earlier April starts, most are attempting to delay harvest until May.
At this time, Valencia supplies are extremely limited, with only one or two shippers harvesting small volumes primarily for export business.
Sizing expectations for the upcoming Valencia season are expected to follow the Navel season, with an emphasis on larger fruit. Average sizes should remain available, reflecting the same sizing challenges seen throughout the current Navel season.
It is also important to note that Valencia oranges differ from Navels. Valencia's typically have a lighter exterior color and contain seeds, while Navels are deeper in color and generally seedless.
Valencia's are considered summer oranges and may experience re‑greening as weather temperatures increase. This natural phenomenon occurs during the ripening process when warm conditions cause the rind to re‑absorb chlorophyll, resulting in a green tint—most commonly at the stem end. Despite this green coloration, the fruit remains fully ripe, sweet, and juicy.
From an eating‑quality standpoint, Valencia brix levels are currently in the 11–12 range, compared to 13–14 brix for Navels.
